Feature Extraction from Engineering Drawings

Stop keying drawings into spreadsheets by hand. Upload the drawing, review what the software reads, and save it to the part.

Blueprint Intelligence reads an engineering drawing and extracts its dimensions, tolerances, GD&T callouts, material specification, SC/CC classifications, and drawing notes into a structured table you review. Save it to your Part Library, and the characteristics are passed to the AI model that drafts your Control Plans, PFMEAs, Inspection Plans, and Process Flows, so you do not key them in again.

Extraction

The drawing goes in. A table you can check comes out.

Capabilities

What Blueprint Intelligence does

Dimensions & Tolerances

AI extracts each dimensioned feature with its nominal value, plus and minus tolerances, and unit. A range tolerance is converted to a nominal with plus and minus limits, and a value it cannot read clearly is kept and marked unclear rather than dropped. The structured tolerance band is what the Inspection Plan and Control Plan generators receive.

GD&T Callouts

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing feature control frames are parsed into the geometric characteristic, such as flatness, position, profile, or runout, the tolerance zone shape, and the datum references with any material condition modifiers.

SC/CC Characteristics

SC and CC special characteristics, and diamond-marked key characteristics, are flagged from the symbols the drawing uses. The flags travel with each characteristic into Control Plan and PFMEA generation, where the model is told to prioritize SC and CC characteristics.

Material Specifications

The material specification is read from the title block. Heat treatment, plating, coating, and surface finish requirements are captured as process notes, and Ra surface finish callouts become characteristics. The material and process notes are saved with the part and passed to the PFMEA and Control Plan generators.

Drawing Notes & References

General notes, process notes, and special instructions are captured, and referenced specifications (ASTM, SAE, AMS, customer-specific) are listed separately. Look them up against the built-in standards reference to see their key requirements and inspection implications before you generate documents.

Part Identity Detection

Part number, part name, and revision level are read from the drawing title block, and the part is created in the Part Library with those values when you save. Check them on the part record, because a field the model could not read is saved with a placeholder.

Suggested Process Steps

Based on the part features and material identified in the drawing, AI suggests a likely sequence of manufacturing operations. It is a suggestion, not a declared fact about your shop, so check it against how you actually run the part.

Multiple File Formats

Upload PDF engineering drawings, PNG or JPG scans, or TIFF files up to 50 MB each. A multi-page PDF is sent to the model as one document. CAD-exported PDFs give the best results, and scans work when they are legible.

Who does what

Drawing feature extraction: the software prepares, an engineer decides.

Prepared by the software

  • Reads the title block, views, and notes, and lists each dimensioned feature, GD&T callout, and characteristic classification it can identify
  • Returns structured rows, not OCR text: nominal, plus and minus tolerance, unit, and the view or zone each dimension appears in
  • Flags SC, CC, and diamond-marked characteristics from the symbols on the drawing
  • Parses GD&T symbols and frames including datum references, tolerance zones, and geometric characteristic types
  • Reads part number, name, and revision from the title block to create the part record when you save
  • Recommends a gauge, its resolution, and a sample size for each characteristic using fixed rules, and suggests a likely sequence of manufacturing steps

Decided by an engineer

  • Approves or rejects each document change the software proposes from a corrective action or an engineering change, before it is applied
  • Approves, rejects, or waives each PPAP element, and approves or rejects the submission
  • Approves NCR dispositions and signs off each corrective action
  • Signs control plans, PFMEAs, and other title-block documents by role, and enters the authorized signature on the warrant

Signed in the app: typed signature, name, date

Workflow

How it works

  1. 01Upload an engineering drawing (PDF, PNG, JPG, or TIFF)
  2. 02AI reads the drawing and extracts its features, running in the background on large drawings
  3. 03Review extracted dimensions, GD&T, materials, and notes
  4. 04Save to Part Library with characteristics and specs
  5. 05Generate Control Plans, PFMEAs, and Inspection Plans from the extracted data

Use cases

Built for teams that work from engineering drawings

  • Quality engineers receiving new part drawings who need to build complete APQP documentation, extracting features once and generating every document from the same data
  • Inspection planners creating measurement requirement tables directly from GD&T callouts and dimensional tolerances on the drawing
  • PFMEA teams identifying potential failure modes from extracted SC/CC characteristics and critical dimensional features
  • Supplier quality engineers reviewing incoming drawings and quickly structuring part data into the Part Library for tracking
  • NPI teams under tight timelines who need to get from drawing receipt to documented Control Plans and Inspection Plans fast
  • Manufacturing engineers using AI-suggested process steps as a starting point for Process Flow diagrams based on part geometry and materials

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What file formats does Blueprint Intelligence support?
Blueprint Intelligence accepts PDF engineering drawings, PNG and JPG scans, and TIFF files. Each file can be up to 50 MB. A multi-page PDF is sent to the model as one document, so it sees every page. Both vector PDFs (CAD exports) and scanned or raster drawings work.
What exactly gets extracted from a drawing?
From the title block: part number, part name, revision, and the material specification. From the drawing: each dimension with its nominal, plus and minus tolerance, and unit; GD&T callouts with the geometric characteristic, tolerance zone shape, and datum references; SC, CC, and diamond classifications; and surface finish callouts. Thread and weld callouts are parsed in detail when the drawing has them. Also general and process notes (heat treatment, plating, coating, surface finish), referenced specifications such as ASTM, SAE, AMS, and customer specs, and a suggested sequence of manufacturing steps.
How does extracted data flow into document generation?
When you save, the extracted characteristics become the first revision of the part in your Part Library. When you generate a Control Plan, PFMEA, Inspection Plan, or Process Flow for that part, the characteristics, tolerances, SC/CC flags, material, notes, and referenced specifications are passed to the AI model as drawing data, with an instruction to prioritize SC and CC characteristics. The model drafts the document from them, and you review the draft before anyone signs it.
Can I edit the extracted data before using it?
Yes. The extraction is shown for review, and nothing is written to your Part Library until you click Save. Once it is saved, you edit, add, or remove characteristics, drawing notes, and process notes on the part's active revision. The AI extraction gives you a structured starting point, not a locked result.
How accurate is the AI extraction?
Extraction accuracy depends on drawing quality and clarity. Clean CAD-exported PDFs give the best results. Scanned drawings work when the scan is legible. AI structures what it can read, and a value it cannot read clearly is kept and marked unclear. You review the result before it is saved to the part.
Does it work with non-English drawings?
The extraction has no language setting or filter. Dimensional callouts, GD&T symbols, and material specification formats use standard notation. Notes in other languages come back as text in the notes list, so review them alongside the structured data.
